Fes to Sahara Desert 4 Days Tour

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Cedar Forest – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Your adventure begins with a 7 a.m. pickup from your hotel or riad as we journey south into the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop is the charming alpine town of Ifrane, built by the French in the 1930s and often called “Morocco’s Switzerland” for its European-style chalet architecture and snowy winters. Continuing through the vast cedar forests surrounding the Berber town of Azrou, you’ll encounter troops of wild Barbary macaques in their natural habitat, eager to greet visitors among the ancient trees.

We wind our way through forested peaks, twisting mountain streams, and jagged rock walls before crossing into the desert plain. Passing through the historic town of Rissani, you’ll witness the dramatic and sudden emergence of the towering Erg Chebbi sand dunes, some reaching up to 50 meters in height, stretching eastward into the Algerian Sahara. Upon arrival at the foot of the dunes, you’ll be welcomed with a refreshing glass of hot sweet mint tea at your kasbah or hotel, where you can relax after the journey, enjoy a delicious dinner, and listen to traditional Berber music before a peaceful night’s rest.

Day 2: Merzouga – Khamlia – Camel Trek – Desert Camp

After breakfast, the day is yours to choose your own experience. You may wander through the immense Erg Chebbi dunes, take a refreshing dip in the hotel pool, or venture to the nearby villages of Merzouga and Khamlia. Known as the “village of the black people,” Khamlia is inhabited by descendants of Sub-Saharan slaves who will enthrall you with their sacred and vibrant Gnawa music performances.

As dusk approaches, your camel will be prepared for an unforgettable 90-minute trek across the shifting desert sands. Watch the sunset paint the dunes in shades of gold and crimson as you journey to a traditional Berber desert encampment. There, you’ll spend the night in a tent surrounded by towering dunes. Your guide will prepare an authentic Moroccan dinner while you relax under a blanket of stars, so bright and numerous they feel within reach, accompanied by the soft sounds of time-honored Berber music.

Day 3: Merzouga – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Fes

You’ll be awakened early to experience the splendor of sunrise over the sand dunes, a truly magical moment as shadows lengthen and shift across the golden landscape. After riding your camel back to the hotel for breakfast, we begin our journey toward the Todra Gorges.

Our route takes us through Rissani, the first capital of the Alaouite dynasty, and Erfoud, renowned for its extraordinary fossils. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to visit local workshops where artisans skillfully extract and polish fossils from stone, with plenty of chances to find a beautiful bargain. We then continue to the dramatic Todra Gorges, where a 300-meter-deep canyon cuts through the eastern High Atlas Mountains. You’ll have time for a relaxed hike through the highest and narrowest gorges in Morocco, often considered the most beautiful. After soaking in the breathtaking scenery, we journey back to Fes through the mighty Middle Atlas Mountains, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or riad in the evening.

Day 4: Todra Gorges – Middle Atlas Mountains – Fes

After breakfast, enjoy more time hiking in the stunning Todra Gorge, taking in the towering canyon walls and the tranquil river below. This is the perfect opportunity to soak in the beauty of one of Morocco’s most dramatic natural landscapes before beginning your journey back to Fes.

We depart through the mighty Middle Atlas Mountains, winding through forested peaks and picturesque Berber villages. The scenic drive offers breathtaking views of the diverse landscapes that make this region so unique. You’ll arrive in Fes in the late afternoon or early evening, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or riad.
