Go on an unforgettable 4-day journey from the imperial city of Fes to the vibrant heart of Marrakech, traversing Morocco’s most diverse and breathtaking landscapes. This adventure takes you from the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas to the towering golden dunes of the Sahara, where you’ll experience a camel trek and overnight in a traditional desert camp.
Along the way, you’ll walk through the dramatic Todra Gorges, visit nomadic families in their cave dwellings, and explore the legendary Route of a Thousand Kasbahs. The journey culminates with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech, offering an authentic immersion into Morocco’s rich culture, history, and natural beauty.
Your journey begins with pickup from your riad or hotel at 8 a.m. as we set off toward the Sahara. The scenic drive takes you through the Middle Atlas Mountains, with stops in the alpine town of Ifrane and the nearby cedar forests of Azrou, where you can step out and spot wild Barbary macaques in their natural habitat.
Lunch is served in Midelt, the apple and fossil capital of Morocco, nestled between mountain ranges. From there, we continue through the stunning Ziz Valley, a vast palm-filled oasis that marks the transition to the desert. Upon arrival at Erg Chebbi, you’ll mount your camel for a trek across the golden dunes to reach your desert camp, where you’ll spend the night in a traditional Berber tent under a blanket of stars.
After breakfast in the camp, you’ll ride your camel back to the hotel for a refreshing shower. We then depart the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi, driving across the rocky hamada (black desert) to reach the historic Saharan town of Rissani, the former capital of the Tafilalet dynasty.
Continuing north, we pass through Erfoud, famous for its fossilized marble, with an optional stop to visit a fossil workshop. Our journey then takes us to the spectacular Todra Gorges, where sheer canyon walls rise hundreds of meters. You’ll have time to walk through the dramatic canyon before we check into your hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, we travel along the legendary Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, where colossal fortified villages line both sides of the road. Some have been beautifully restored, while others stand as ancient vestiges of a bygone era.
We pass through the Dades Valley and venture off-road into a rocky region dotted with Berber villages, where many nomadic families still live in caves. Here, we’ll have the opportunity to visit one of these families, sharing tea and learning about their daily life herding goats in this rugged landscape. The drive continues through the stunning Valley of the Roses, famous for its annual rose festival, before reaching the lush palm groves of Skoura. We then arrive in Ouarzazate for an overnight stay in a local hotel.
After breakfast, we begin with a visit to the cinema studios of Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa,” where countless epic films have been produced. Our main stop is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, the most famous kasbah in Morocco.
This stunning fortified village has served as a backdrop for over 20 films, including Gladiator, Indiana Jones, and Lawrence of Arabia. You’ll enjoy a guided walk through the kasbah with time to explore its winding streets and earthen architecture.
After lunch at the foot of the kasbah, we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters. The winding road offers breathtaking views of terraced Berber villages and dramatic mountain landscapes, with several photo stops along the way. We arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening, where you will be dropped off at your riad or hotel.
